A personal note

Room for companions from all over the world.

Mission, vision and values, from a half-century of public life.

Mission

I have entered the eighth decade of my life. I mean to spend the years that remain as a guru and mentor to those of you pursuing better human and planetary outcomes.

What I know of policy, diplomacy, strategy and advocacy comes together in my new book, The Manifesto of Hope: A New Social Contract for Our Human Family (Barlow Books, October 2026). It is the capstone of my life’s work: practical and philosophical guidance on sustainability, the climate challenge and how to pay for inclusive development. Above all, it argues that the Global South must be free to reach the capital people need for a meaningful life, and for the green transition and climate resilience in particular.

Vision

I have given most of fifty years of public service to championing human rights as a way of life: a world in which people of all origins live together with dignity, in community, free from fear and free from want, in harmony with one another and with the natural world.

That is the future my writing and my speeches describe. There is ample room in it for companions from all over the world.

The road here

My life in this century, as a strategist, adviser, writer and storyteller, rests on a career in the last one as a journalist with barriers to break. In 1975 I became the first person of colour in the press gallery of the Alberta legislature. I went on to become Canada’s first editorialist, foreign correspondent and columnist of colour. At a time of division I argued for Canadian values broad enough to hold the whole diversity of human experience: a country where people of every origin can find meaning and purpose.

Today I serve on boards that each contribute to the common good. I am particularly proud of my work as chairman of baüne, which uses human digital twins and autonomous care units to deliver proactive, data-driven health care for all of humanity.

Values

Dignity

Human rights not as a slogan but as a way of life.

Inclusion

Setting the table so that people of every origin have a seat at it.

Stewardship

Growth that leaves the planet, and the balance sheet, in better shape.

Service

Boards chosen because each contributes to the common good.

I would be honoured to share the journey with you.
